FAQs

Why might the faculty count in this dashboard differ from an HR or departmental report?

Faculty counts can differ because reports may use different employee populations, reporting dates, appointment definitions, or classification rules. This dashboard uses a November 1 fall reporting snapshot and applies the faculty classifications described in the glossary and data notes.

How are faculty with appointments across multiple campuses or schools reported?

Faculty with appointments across multiple campuses or schools are assigned to a designated primary reporting unit for reporting purposes. This allows faculty to be represented consistently while avoiding double-counting in university-wide totals.

Why isn’t a faculty member’s title listed as an academic rank?

Rutgers uses a variety of faculty titles that do not correspond directly to the academic rank categories used for federal reporting. For this dashboard, Rutgers-specific titles are mapped to the applicable reporting category, such as Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor/Lecturer, or No Academic Rank.

What is the difference between faculty headcount and full-time equivalent (FTE)?

Headcount counts individual faculty members, regardless of whether they are full-time or part-time. FTE converts faculty into a standardized full-time equivalent for reporting purposes. In some reports, including certain IPEDS-derived measures, each full-time faculty member counts as one FTE, and each part-time faculty member counts as 1/3 FTE, regardless of the individual’s actual percent effort or appointment. As a result, FTE should be interpreted as a standardized reporting measure rather than a precise measure of faculty workload.

What is the difference between tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track faculty?

Tenured faculty have been granted tenure by the university. Tenure-track faculty hold appointments that may lead to tenure but have not yet been granted tenure. Non-tenure-track faculty hold appointments that are not part of the tenure system.
